Edison’s Johns, West Potomac’s Colligan take top honors in Occoquan Region
It’s been another outstanding season for the Edison girls basketball team, as the Lady Eagles qualified for the state tournament yet again after finishing runners-up in the Occoquan Region.
Three senior stars for Edison were was named to the first-team All-Occoquan Region team, including Player of the Year Bri Johns. Joining her on the first team were Charlotte Jewell and Aurea Gingras. The 22-6 Eagles face Marshall tonight in the first round of states.
West Potomac’s best season since 1992 was also rewarded with a trio of all-region honors. Brian Colligan was named Coach of the Year and junior Caroline Eby made the first team. The 19-7 Wolverines captured their first district championship in 28 years this season, and will bring back much of their roster, including second-team all-region selection Danea Mackey.
Hayfield guard Kendall Dunham, who was the Gunston District Player of the Year, was one of two sophomores to make the first team. Lady Hawks teammate Ayana Gillen made honorable mention all-region.
Mount Vernon sophomore guard Isabela Lujan-Gonzalez rounded out the local selections, making honorable mention all-region.
