New principal hired for Cameron Elementary

Eric Johnson has been hired as the next principal of Cameron Elementary School, Fairfax County Public Schools announced Monday.

Johnson has been the principal of Sleepy Hollow Elementary School in Falls Church for the past four years. In 2018 he was named the Region 2 Outstanding New Principal by FCPS. Johnson also earned the FCPS 2019 Closing the Gap and Raising the Bar Award, as well as the FCPS 2019 Justice Pyramid Outstanding Principal Award. He is currently a nominee for the FCPS 2020 Outstanding Principal Award.

According to FCPS, Johnson has 26 years of teaching experience. Prior to becoming a principal he served as an assistant principal at assistant principal at Westlawn Elementary and Bren Mar Park Elementary. He has also worked as a teacher at the elementary school level, a Title I reading specialist and a summer school site administrator.

Johnson replaces Timothy Slayter, who took over as principal of Fort Hunt Elementary School in January. Johnson begins as the new principal effective March 2, according to FCPS. Jamie Meier, who served as Waynewood Elementary principal for many years before retiring, has been serving as the interim principal at Cameron.

Johnson is a graduate of Norfolk State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science. He earned his elementary education endorsement from the College of St. Elizabeth in Morristown, N.J., and earned a Master of Education in reading from Trinity University in Washington, D.C., as well as a Master of Education in educational leadership from George Mason University.

Cameron Elementary is located in the Burgundy Village neighborhood, and pulls students from there and the Huntington area. A Title 1 school, Cameron is part of the Edison High School pyramid.
