Timothy Slayter has been appointed the new principal of Fort Hunt Elementary School, Fairfax County Public Schools announced on Friday.

Slayter is currently the principal of Cameron Elementary School, and was the principal at Bucknell Elementary before that. He replaces Thomas Fitzpatrick, who had been principal at Fort Hunt since 2014 before stepping down at the end of last year. Larry Jones served as the interim principal during the search for a new full-time replacement.

“It will not take you long to realize that Mr. Slayter is a dedicated, reflective, and collaborative leader,” Region 3 Superintendent Nardos King said in a press release. “As the newest member of the Fort Hunt family, Mr. Slayter is looking forward to learning about the rich traditions, meeting students, families and staff, and embracing Fort Hunt for the wonderful school community it is.”

Slayter will officially start at Fort Hunt on January 6.

According to FCPS, Slayter has worked in education for 23 years, with stints as an elementary school teacher, a summer school site administrator, a team leader at an advanced placement center and as an assistant principal at Glen Forest Elementary School in Falls Church.

Prior to entering teaching, Slayter earned his Bachelor of Arts from St. Mary’s College in Maryland. He has a Masters of Arts in Teaching from the College of Notre Dame in Maryland, and has completed course work in elementary education and counseling, according to FCPS.
