A ceremonial groundbreaking was held for the new Woodlawn Fire Station on Friday.

Mount Vernon District Supervisor Dan Storck, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Chief John Butler and Deputy County Executive David Rohrer were among those who attended the event.

Storck said in a statement that the new 15,000-square foot station, which is being built next to the current station on Lukens Lane, was an example of how the county is improving services in the Route 1 area.

“This new, improved fire and rescue station is designed to improve emergency response services in the Woodlawn community as it grows, and we embark on the 21st century redevelopment of Richmond Highway,” Storck said in a press release.
