Payless ShoeSource is closing all 2,100 of its stores nationwide, including its Richmond Highway location in the Mount Vernon Plaza shopping center, as part of a bankruptcy agreement.

A worker at the Route 1 location said Monday they had not yet heard when that store would be closing, but a final liquidation sale has begun. The company has said that the closures will happen between March and May on a rolling basis.

Payless ShoeSource also has a location in Kingstowne as well as in Seven Corners, Leesburg Pike Plaza in Falls Church and Springfield Town Center. The chain’s online store will also be closing.

The Payless located in the Beacon Center closed in 2017 during one of the chain’s first rounds of closures after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The company was founded in Topeka, Kansas in the mid-1950s. The company has 3,600 stores worldwide (international locations are not closing at this time) and more than 18,000 employees.
