Payless at Beacon Center closes

Store closing signs

Store closing signs are seen at the Beacon Center’s Payless ShoeSource.

Payless ShoeSource at the Beacon Center shut its doors for good on Monday.

The Richmond Highway store was a casualty in the footwear chain’s ongoing restructuring since filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April. Payless has closed or has plans to close at least 673 stores nationwide, according to a company representative.

The Beacon Center location was not on Payless’s original list of stores to close, but a second wave of closings announced in June marked the end of the line.

Payless stores in the Mount Vernon Plaza shopping center and in Kingstowne remain open. Neither of those locations is on Payless’s the most recent list of stores that are “under negotiation” to stay in business (the location at Springfield Town Center is on that list, however).

There is no word yet on what will replace Payless at the Beacon Center. However, the shopping center has had good luck filling vacant spaces in recent years. Fabric Place Basement immediately took over a space left empty after Hancock Fabrics went out of business in 2016, and Topper’s Pizza is slated to move into the spot formerly occupied by Zinga Frozen Yogurt, which closed earlier this year.
