Storck makes case for re-election in letter to constituents

Mount Vernon District Supervisor Dan Storck, right, speaks with Rep. Don Beyer during Storck’s campaign event on Dec. 1.

Mount Vernon District Supervisor Dan Storck has released an open letter to the public laying out the reasons he is running for re-election.

Storck, who kicked off his campaign on December 1, lists accomplishments from his first term, including the passage of the Embark Richmond Highway amendment, progress on new capital projects such the Lorton Community Center, the South County Police Station and Animal Shelter, the renovation of the Mount Vernon RECenter, the reopening of the Original Mount Vernon High School and master planning process for that site’s future.

Storck also states that  he hopes to bring “a voice of experience, strong community engagement and a desire to get things done” during a coming time of transition on the board.  Three current members, including Chairman Sharon Bulova, have announced they will not be seeking re-election. Additionally, Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay is running to fill Bulova’s chairman position, meaning Storck will be the senior supervisor representing the Richmond Highway area if he is re-elected.

So far no other candidates have declared their intention to run for Mount Vernon District supervisor.

Dear Neighbor,

Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your Mount Vernon District Supervisor! This community means everything to me and my first term in office has been full of energy, challenges, successes and engagement with you.

As promised, I have delivered dramatically increased communications through all media channels, fully funded education, added new police officers and funded human services. I have followed my passion by improving our education system and our environment, focusing my business knowledge on economic development, revitalization, affordable housing and transportation, while reconnecting residents with each other.

There is much, much more to be done to bring us fully into the 21st Century. In my first term I have laid the foundation of key relationships, funding and support to accelerate our getting there.

Much has been accomplished these past 3 years, with more to be done! Highlights include:

  • Embark Comprehensive Plan Amendment, setting the stage for the revitalization of Richmond Highway with public and private investments exceeding $1 Billion.
  • Reopened Original Mount Vernon High School to our community and began the master planning process to fully reactivate this 1930’s era community landmark.
  • Oversaw the continued very successful renovation and adaptive reuse of the Lorton Prison sites.
  • Major capital construction projects, including the new Lorton Community Center, the new South County Police Station and Animal Shelter, the Mount Vernon RECenter, Penn Daw Fire Station and Woodlawn Fire Station.
  • Fully funded school operations, renovations of six District elementary schools and planning for two others.
  • Brought together community teams working to reduce airplane noise, traffic congestion, unemployment, homelessness and crime, as well as to increase public safety, educational opportunities, environmental protection, job growth, access to affordable housing, health care and domestic violence shelters.

I am passionate, determined and engaged in fighting to improve the lives of each and every Mount Vernon neighbor and business owner. TEAM MVD and I are committed to working with you to address your individual concerns, while working proactively with you and others to deliver a better quality of life for all District residents. Your continued support and enthusiasm are essential to this progress.

With the anticipated changes in County leadership, I bring a voice of experience, strong community engagement and a desire to get things done to the Board. Read the recent Washington Post article here. I greatly value your support for my re-election to a second term, look forward to building upon our many successes, and would welcome the honor of serving as your Mount Vernon District Supervisor for another four years.
