Metro only running 26 bus routes this weekend

The Huntington Metro station is seen largely empty on March 15.

Metro, which operates 325 bus routes in normal times, will be down to just 26 bus routes this weekend as the transit system continues to adjust to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Richmond Highway Express (REX) is one of the few routes that will be running this weekend. It is one of just five routes running in Virginia.

In a press release, WMATA said the bus routes still operating are considered “lifelines” for riders that need them for essential trips.

“Essential travel includes medical providers and hospital staff, first responders, critical government functions, individuals involved in helping the community respond to COVID-19, grocery and pharmacy trips, among others,” WMATA said.

The bus routes still running will be following a Sunday schedule. Riders are asked to continue using the rear door to board the bus.

Ridership on Metrobus was down 72 percent last Sunday, according to preliminary statitistics on the WMATA website.

Metrorail will continue to run every 30 minutes this weekend. Earlier this week Metro closed 17 stations in the system due to low ridership and the need to conserve cleaning supplies, WMATA said. The Huntington Metro and Franconia-Springfield Metro stations remain open.
