Hayfield turned in a dominant performance at last week’s the Gunston District Gymnastics Championships, earning the Hawks their third consecutive district title.
Hayfield gymnasts finished in first and second place of every individual category en route to a 20-point team win Wednesday at Mount Vernon High School. Hawks coach Shelly Pennow Shore said the victory has given Hayfield confidence and momentum heading into this week’s Occoquan Region tournament, where Fairfax High School is expected to be the favorite.
“[W]e we are really excited about the amount of talent on this team and our ability to bring pressure to the other top teams in the region at the regional meet on Wednesday,” Pennow said.
Hayfield senior Cierra Munns finished first in the all-around competition, including a first-place performance in the floor exercise. Freshman Cassidy Mazyck, sophomore Melanie Rodriguez and senior Virginia Keys finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th, respectively in the all-around competition, while senior Sarah Lewis finished sixth.
Rodriguez finished first in both the balance beam and vault, while Keys finished first in the uneven bars.
West Potomac finished second overall, with three gymnasts — Elise Orr,Brielle Brown and Kiera Martin — finishing in the top 10 all around. Mount Vernon’s Miah Fisher also made the top 10 all-around with an eighth-place finish.
