“Sensible” gun laws. That is what being proposed. Let’s take a look at the sensible gun laws that exist for our neighbors in DC.
– Permission required to purchase firearms
– Firearms must be registered
– 10 day waiting period
– 10 round magazine limit
– No open carry
– Assault weapons ban to include any weapon the police chief deems to be an assault weapon
– Background checks for private gun sales
– 21 to purchase/transport firearms
– No recognition of other jurisdictions’ concealed carry permits
– No carrying in government buildings
– No firearms on school grounds
– No carry at preschools
– No carrying on colleges and universities
– No carrying in polling places
– No carry at places that serve alcohol
– No carrying on public transportation to include the metro
– No carrying at places of worship
– No carrying at public memorials of in the capital buildings and grounds
None of these requirements, prohibitions and requirements currently exist in Virginia. DC had a population of around 700,000 and had 166 homicides in 2019. In Fairfax county, we have a population of nearly 1.2 million and only had 14 homicides in 2019. The violent crime rate in DC is nearly 1,000 (995.9) incidents per 100,000 residents while in Fairfax County it is 81 incidents per 100,000 residents.
Indeed, guns save lives. Let’s not be like DC. Protect Second Amendment rights.
Only a tiny percentage of annual homicides are committed with rifles and only a small percentage of those with AR-15s. More victims are beat to death than that.
And since the 1950s, fully 98% of mass shootings have occurred in “gun-free zones”. 98%! Think of how many lives might have been saved if those places had not been “gun-free”! Guns save many more lives than they take. The First and Second Amendments make the rest of the Amendments possible. Enforce the gun laws we already have. Don’t make more.
Agree!
