Man arrested after firing gun in Groveton area, fleeing scene
A man is in custody after allegedly firing a weapon from a home in the Groveton area last night and then fleeing the scene, setting off a massive police search.
Scott York, 53, faces a host of charges including unlawful discharge of a firearm and multiple drug possession charges.
Police say the incident began shortly before 10 p.m. when neighbors reported seeing a man firing a weapon from a house in the 2800 block of Groveton Street (see map). According to Fairfax County property records, York owns a home on that block.
York allegedly fled the scene before officers arrived, leading to a search involving two police helicopters, SWAT team members and dozens of officers. Pictures from the scene shared on social media showed officers with rifles and an armored police vehicle near an office building at 6911 Richmond Highway.
York was eventually tracked to a location nearly two miles away in the 5600 block of Norton Road (see map), where he was taken into custody by SWAT team members, according to police.
No injuries were reported. It is unclear if any property was damaged by the shooting. Police did not disclose the type of firearm allegedly used by York.
Why I carry in the corridor.
So we can look forward to your future turn in the headlines?
It would prove beneficial if you’d take the time to re-educate yourself.
I’d love to see follow-on reporting to tell us which of the governor’s ludicrous gun-control proposals would have stopped this.
Would have stopped what? Drugs make people do dumb shit. That’s what this was. This was not an active shooter, this was an active dumbass.
And this drug user likely should have been in jail, but he wasn’t. He was free, had access to a gun and was a threat to himself and the community. He also put the lives of first responders and those in the area in danger- and his apprehension cost taxpayers loads of money. I refuse to blame all of this on a weapon- and absolve the judicial system, government, individual, failing mental health policies/program outreach and affordability and increasingly popular “soft on minor offenses” legislation. Virginia is going to be the next California- just be careful what you wish for. Once things go down this road, it’s hard, as citizens, to turn the tide again.
