Eight displaced by fire in Fairhaven neighborhood

An electrical fire in a Fairhaven house on Thursday afternoon resulted in no injuries but displaced eight residents, according to the Fairfax Fire and Rescue Department.

The fire was reported around 4:25 p.m. in the 2500 block of Byrd Lane (see map). Units from the Alexandria Fire Department and Fairfax Fire and Rescue arrived and extinguished a fire that was mostly contained to inside the walls on the home’s first floor.

Five people were home at the time of the fire and all evacuated safely after smelling smoke. The house did have working smoke alarms, which activated as they were evacuating, according to the fire department.

Investigators determined that an electrical short in the wall behind a utility closet in the home triggered the blaze.

The home’s residents are receiving assistance from the Red Cross, according to the fire department. The damage to the home is estimated to be around $37,500.
