A man suspected in stabbing at a Richmond Highway bus stop surrendered to officers without incident after a standoff Friday afternoon.

The standoff took place at a townhouse in the 8300 block of Brockham Drive (see map), which is in the Mount Vernon Lakes community off of Buckman Road. The standoff began around 12:30 p.m., and it ended roughly 25 minutes later when the suspect was taken into custody.

Police say the suspect was responsible for a stabbing that occurred at a bus stop in front of the nearby Gerry Hyland Government Center on Richmond Highway a couple hours earlier. The victim of the stabbing sustained non-life-threatening injuries, a police spokesman said.

The suspect’s name was not immediately available, nor were the specific charges he is facing. Neighbors at the scene said that he lived in the townhouse.

The barricade situation drew a large police response, including the Fairfax 1 helicopter and SWAT officers from the FCPD’s Special Operations Division. However by 1:30 p.m. many of the officers had left and the entrance to the townhouse development had been reopened to traffic.
