SFDC honors businesses beautifying Richmond Highway Corridor
Several Richmond Highway businesses and properties received recognition for landscape improvements at the Southeast Fairfax Development Corporation’s (SFDC) 18th annual Mary Thonen Beautification Awards last night.
SFDC president Mark Viani presented awards to the top three winners in three separate categories: residential, hospitality/lodging and retail. In the residential category, Montebello Condominium took first place followed by The Beacon of Groveton and The Village at Gum Springs.
Candlewood Suites Alexandria-Fort Belvoir took the top slot in the hospitality/lodging category while SpringHill Suites Alexandria and Hampton Inn and Suites Fort Belvoir Alexandria South tied for second place. In the retail category, Mount Vernon Plaza received top honors followed by Costco and Jiffy Lube.
The awards ceremony was held at Woodlawn Press Winery with catering by ColMoni’s Catering at Frontier Kitchen. According to SFDC marketing and communications specialist Alexis DeFrancisco, the recently opened microwinery at Cooper Center made an ideal venue for the event.
“The ceremony is all about showcasing what’s available on the corridor, so we wanted to select someplace new and exciting,” DeFrancisco said.
The annual Mary Thonen Beautification Awards are open to any business establishments that are visible from Richmond Highway. Entrants are judged by SFDC’s Marketing, Community Appearance, Planning, Transportation Committee on general aesthetics of plantings and accent materials, as well as their maintenance/grooming throughout the year.
