A man driving a Lincoln Town Car went off the road and struck a utility pole near Costco in the Hybla Valley area on Sunday afternoon.
The driver was alert and talking with paramedics after the crash, which happened a little before 3:30 p.m in the 7900 block of Richmond Highway (see map). The pole and the Town Car were significantly damaged by the impact, but the pole managed to stay upright.
It is not immediately clear what caused the car to swerve off the road. No other vehicles were involved, according to witnesses.
The crash closed down two lanes on northbound Richmond Highway for a short time, and then closed the left lane only for an unknown time.
There have been several accidents at this location on Route 1 this year. One thing that seems to happen (and it happened to me) is that the right turn lane coming south on Route 1 at the Walmart and then Costco seems to allow cars to pass straight through the access to Walmart and into the Costco. Cars do not turn into Walmart but continue to the Costco entrance and when a person wanting to turn into Costco has to deal with the driver already there passing the Walmart entrance. Not sure if that is what VDOT intended. Perhaps that should be looked at.
