One killed in GW Parkway crash

Police and Fire
One person is dead after a crash overnight on the southern end of the George Washington Parkway.
A vehicle went off the road and hit a tree near Stratford Lane around 1:15 a.m, according to U.S. Park Police spokesman Sgt. Eduardo Delgado. The vehicle flipped over and caught fire after hitting the tree, Delgado said.
The driver of the vehicle died in the wreck. No other occupants were in the vehicle, and no other vehicles are believed to have been involved.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation, and police have not yet released the identity of the victim.
The crash is the second fatal crash on the GW Parkway this year. In April one person was killed and three were seriously injured in a head-on collision near Morningside Lane.
They need to re-pave GW Parkway. I have been driving there for 6 consecutive years and it is only getting worst. Don’t pick-&-patch the cracks and potholes….re-pave the entire thing. Many times I have swerved to avoid the horrible repairs the County has done. And their are no street lights at night neither. Very difficult to see at night!!! No streetlights lights (no visibility), potholes, shoddy pavement repairs and wildlife running around, it’s no surprise crashes happen often there!!!
Not a county road. People drive way too fast there anyway. Think of how bad it would be if they smoothed out the cracks. Drive for your conditions and put down the phones! Sad to hear of another death on this road.
“Speed” is only a small part of the overall problem with the Parkway. I think a large part of the problem is people turning left from the side streets (i.e. Morningside, Tulane, etc.) trying to beat oncoming traffic. I can’t count the number of times I’ve almost broadsided or rear-ended idiots trying to beat traffic.
Another issue are buses. Why they haven’t been restricted from the Parkway is beyond me. The lanes are too narrow and cause traffic to squeeze. They should all go down Route 1 to Belle Haven.
Also, driver ignorance of the rules of the road: RIGHT SLOW; LEFT GO. If you want to go 45 (or in most cases 40) stay in the right lane. Left lane is for passing (or in most cases the running roadblock).
I hate the Parkway and will only use it in an emergency.
Agree on all of this. For the life of me I can’t understand having bus stops along the parkway. People crossing the parkway to get to northbound buses is frightening, with shorter days fast approaching.
The safest time to drive on that road is late at night when it’s pretty empty. Put your high beams on, and it’s fine. However it’s extremely dangerous during the day and in rush hour. People are driving way too fast and you can’t see the lines.
There’s deer to worry about then at this time of year, and the usual problem with flashing on-coming drivers doing the same thing. My preferred way to drive the Parkway during the day is to cruise-control in the right lane at 45 with my foot over the brake; it would be a good drive except for, well, drivers. The thing I see as most objectionable is the ones weaving lanes, who don’t seem to understand that being able to go 10 miles north/south at a reliable pace is more efficient than anything aggressive driving further inland can obtain you and to stop getting people killed over it.
