Edison grads killed in Labor Day weekend crashes
A 2015 graduate of Edison High School died Saturday morning after the car he was driving overturned on Interstate 64 in Goochland County, Va.
Brandon E. Dorns, 22, was driving a 2014 Mazda 3 in the right lane when the vehicle veered off the left side of the road a little before 5 a.m., the Virginia State Police said. The vehicle went down an embankment, overturned and caught fire, according to the police. Dorns died at the scene.
Abanoub Zaki, 19, of Chesterfield, Va., was in the front passenger seat and sustained serious injuries, the state police said.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and speed is a possible factor in the wreck, police said.
Dorns attended Virginia Commonwealth University. His fraternity has setup a GoFundMe page to help pay for Dorns’ funeral expenses and for Zaki’s medical expenses, according to The Commonwealth Times.
Fatal motorcycle crash
Daniel Pittman, a 1996 Edison graduate, also died over the holiday weekend after his motorcycle collided with a vehicle on Interstate 95 in Prince William County.
The Virginia State Police said that Pittman was driving a 2008 Suzuki GSXR750 motorcycle was southbound on I-95 when it struck the front of a southbound 2018 BMW X5. Pittman was ejected from the motorcycle and died from his injuries at the scene. Police say he was wearing a helmet.
Pittman, a Woodbridge resident, was 41.
The Virginia State Police said Tuesday that 11 people died in nine traffic crashes over Labor Day weekend. Five of the fatalities were in crashes involving a motorcycle.
