3rd annual Samuel Kwarteng Basketball Tournament coming up
Friends of the late Samuel Kwarteng continue to honor the Mount Vernon High School graduate with an annual charity basketball tournament.
This year’s tournament features 12 men’s teams and four women’s teams and will be held August 3-4 at Mount Vernon. The games begin at 10 a.m. and admission is $5 per day. Food and drink will be sold on site, and anyone is welcome to attend.
The event is run by Acquiring Knowledge for Transcendence, a group begun by Kwarteng’s friends in the wake of his death. AKT has awarded scholarship money to Mount Vernon seniors the two previous years. The tournament is also sponsored by Mount Vernon High School and the Mount Vernon High School Booster Club.
Samuel Kwarteng graduated from Mount Vernon in 2013 and was a senior at Virginia Commonwealth University when he was killed in an off-campus shooting in April 2017. Prosecutors later ruled the shooting was accidental. Kwarteng, an electrical engineering major, was 20 years old.
