Thousands without power after multiple outages

This map from Dominion Energy shows some of the areas affected by Thursday afternoon’s power outages, although customers west of Telegraph Road also reported losing power.

Multiple power outages in the northern end of the Richmond Highway area left thousands without power on Thursday afternoon.

The first outage occurred around 1 p.m. near Telegraph Road, according to a Dominion Energy spokeswoman. A tree on a wire led to 3,800 customers losing power in the Huntington, Jefferson Manor and Wilton Woods areas.

A second, unrelated outage happened around 2:30 p.m. when a cross arm broke on a power pole in the Penn Daw area, the spokeswoman said. That incident left approximately 3,350 Dominion customers without power, ranging from Belle Haven to Groveton. Dominion crews had to wait for the fire department to clear the area before repairing the pole, the Dominion spokesman said.

A Fairfax Fire and Rescue spokeswoman confirmed that the fire department had responded to a small blaze on Chili Street in the Penn Daw Terrace Trailer Park (see map). She wasn’t sure if the fire had caused the pole issue or if the pole issue had caused the fire, which was quickly extinguished by crews. No injuries were reported.

Power was restored to most customers in both areas between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., and as of 9:30 p.m. Dominion’s outage map only showed a handful of customers remained without power.
