Chamber awards scholarships to local high school seniors
The Mount Vernon-Lee chamber of Commerce awarded nine scholarships to area high school seniors last week during a ceremony at The Fairfax Retirement Community on Fort Belvoir.
The nine scholarships totaled $19,000. Six of the recipients were slected for the Chamber’s Distinguished Business Scholarship:
- Grant Holder, South County High School
- Kate Lachman, Lee High School
- Sean Murphy, West Potomac High School
- Connor Breen, Gonzaga College High School
- Kathleen Nguyen, Mount Vernon High School
- Divya Sethi, South County High School
Additionally, Convanta Fairfax Inc. awarded scholarships to Tara Vasanth of Hayfield Secondary School and Hana Chong of South County High School.
Bishop Ireton High School’s Claudia Klinck was selected as the Chamber’s Ourisman Scholar.
The Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce has been awarding college scholarships to high school seniors for 20 years, with a total value worth more than $219,000.
“We believe that these scholarships are an investment in these students, but also an investment in the future of our community,” Sonja Caison, the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber Chairman, said in a press release. “We are building future business and community leaders.”
“The commitment the chamber makes to ensure scholarships each year is extraordinary,” Holly Dougherty, executive director of the Mount Vernon Lee Chamber of Commerce added. “Our youth are the future, and these scholarships are an investment in the future of our community.”
