Police blotter: Woman accidentally shoots self in foot
A woman accidentally shot herself in the foot on Friday afternoon in the Virginia Hills area, according to Monday’s Fairfax County Police blotter.
Police learned of the incident when they were called to the Lorton Healthplex around 7:20 p.m. for a report of a person with a gunshot wound. Officers learned the woman shot herself accidentally “while playing with her gun in her backyard,” in the 3500 block of Pike Road (see map), police said. A family member drove her to the hospital, according to police.
Nobody else was injured in the incident, and as of Monday police were still consulting with the Commonwealth’s Attorney about filing charges.
It’s the second accidental shooting reported by the Fairfax County Police in the past two weeks. On March 25, a man removing a handgun from a holster accidentally shot himself in the Wegmans parking lot at the corner of Telegraph Road and Beulah Street. The Office of the Commonwealth’s Attorney declined to file charges in that case, according to police.
Man ditches gun during chase
Police arrested a man Friday afternoon after he allegedly tossed a gun to the ground during a brief foot pursuit in the 8200 block of Richmond Highway (see map).
The police said an officer spotted the 27-year-old suspect walking and were aware that he was wanted on an outstanding warrant for trespassing. The suspect fled when approached but was caught by the officer after a brief chase, police said. During the chase, police say the suspect threw a gun to the ground.
The suspect faces charges of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of ammunition by a convicted felon, carrying a concealed weapon, obstruction of justice, trespassing and was served the outstanding trespassing warrant.
