Pedestrian fatally struck on Richmond Highway
A pedestrian died after being hit by a vehicle on Richmond Highway in the Huntington area on Thursday night, according to a tweet by the Fairfax Police.
Nelissa Alston, 51, died on the scene after being struck by a 2015 Lexus RC 350 in the southbound lanes in the 5900 block of Route 1 (see map) around 9:30 p.m.
Images of the crash scene posted to social media showed Alston was hit in front of the Ourisman Jeep Dodge Ram dealership. Police said that Alston was not in a crosswalk, and they don’t believe that excessive speed or alcohol were factors in the crash.
The location of the crash, just south of the Capital Beltway interchange, is one of the widest sections of the highway. There are 11 lanes all the way across the road, including the two left turn lanes to get onto Fort Hunt Road. There is no sidewalk on the southbound side of roadway until past the Fort Hunt Road/Old Richmond Highway intersection.
Police say the striking vehicle stayed on the scene, and the driver is cooperating with investigators.
Police are asking anyone with information about the crash to contact their Crash Reconstruction Unit at 703-280-0543.
I was crossing the highway years ago was hit by a truck it was New Year s Eve I was going to the bus stop on other side he told police he thought I was snow 4 lanes he could of swerved but skid marks showed he was speeding and had been drinking but Diplomatic tags he got away with it
Pedestrians cross there all the time, in order to get over to the walk path that goes to the Parkway. Very dangerous, and the whole corridor there up to the top of the hill at Quander Road, is one of the most dangerous places in NoVA. High speeds, no sidewalks, only a very few crosswalks. Just myself personally, in the last decade, have seen 4 major accidents there, including a fatality, and numerous close calls. I imagine something happens about every day.
Need the fix traffic light at Richmond Highway and Quander Rd. Traffic should be alternated for cars making left turn from Quander Road going south and traffic turn left from opposite side of Route 1 going north. In other words, need left turn light.
