Las Cazuelas, new Mexican restaurant near Buckman Road, opens

The Richmond Highway area’s newest Mexican restaurant opened its doors for business this past Saturday.

Las Cazuelas bills itself as a traditional Mexican restaurant, and its menu boasts familiar fare such as tortas, tacos, enchiladas, fajitas and burritos. There are also traditional Mexican sandwiches such as pambazos and molletes. Prices for many menu items are under $10, while larger entrees run between $10.95-$21.95.

The house specialties include Carne Asada, Ribeye and the “Cazuelas Especial,” a two-person meal consisting of cazuela filled with skirt steak, chicken breast, jumbo shrimp, pork choriza, Oaxca cheese, cactus, guacamole, pico de gallo, Mexican rice and charro beans.

Las Cazuelas will eventually add a brunch menu for the weekends and begin opening earlier on Saturdays and Sundays. The restaurant has also applied for an ABC license, and a manager said Wednesday they hope to get that within the next week or so.

Las Cazuelas is located at 8368 Richmond Highway (see map), which for many years was home to Mike’s Italian Restaurant. Since Mike’s closed in 2011, the building had a brief stint as a title loan business, but had been vacant since early 2017.

The building went through a large renovation prior to opening, including a new inside wall to divide the dining area from the bar area, new tables, chairs and a bar, fresh paint and drywall work, and a brand-new paint job for the exterior.
