Pedestrian killed crossing Route 1 in Lorton

A 63-year-old man was struck and killed Friday morning while trying to cross Richmond Highway in Lorton.

Charles Robinson, a Woodbridge resident, was hit by a 2009 Ford Explorer while attempting to walk across Route 1 near the intersection with Hagel Circle, according to the Fairfax County Police. The crash happened around 6 a.m., and police said there is no marked crosswalk at the intersection.

The driver of the Explorer stayed on the scene and was cooperative with investigators, the police said. Alcohol and speed are not believed to have been factors in the crash, police said. No charges are expected to be filed, according to police.

While Robinson’s death is the first pedestrian death on Richmond Highway in 2018, it is the second time in just over a year that a pedestrian was killed on Route 1 near the Hagel Circle intersection.

Robinson’s death is also the 15th pedestrian fatality in Fairfax County this year, compared to five in 2017. There have been 124 total crashes involving pedestrians so far in 2018, according to statistics provided by the county.
