Don Brideau, M.D., chief executive officer of Inova Mount Vernon Hospital, told attendees at the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce’s Business Breakfast on Thursday that the hospital will introduce several new programs and services in coming years, including a new outpatient dialysis treatment center.

Scheduled to open late next month or in January 2019, the outpatient dialysis center is the result of a joint venture between Inova Health System and Somatus — a kidney care solutions provider. Like its counterpart in Falls Church, the Mount Vernon-based facility will offer in-center dialysis and coordinate home-based hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis for patients. What sets the program apart, Brideau said, is its focus on providing ongoing, intensive support and education for people with kidney disease.

Brideau added that Inova Mount Vernon is opening a new 3 Tesla (3T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner — known for its short scan times and high image quality — at Inova HealthPlex-Lorton in spring 2019, and has recently kicked off a two-year Magnet Recognition Program for its nursing staff. Inova Mount Vernon also has received a Certificate of Public Need (COPN) from the Commonwealth of Virginia to open a 52-bed long-term acute care hospital in the next two years to serve critically ill patients.

Brideau noted that, in line with the hospital’s focus on community health issues such as elder care, diabetes care and mental health/substance abuse, Inova Mount Vernon will continue its monthly ACTIVE lecture series for older community residents, refer diabetes patients to a new shared clinic with Inova Alexandria Hospital, and soon hire a counselor specializing in substance abuse treatment.

Lending an element of breaking news to his presentation, Brideau mentioned that The Leapfrog Group had just released its fall 2018 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, and Inova Mount Vernon received its ninth consecutive “A” Patient Safety Ranking. He said the hospital aims to continue to improve overall value for community members, where value equates to quality plus service/patient experience divided by cost.

“We seek to drive that healthcare equation on a daily basis,” he said. “It’s how we will continue to move forward as a high-value, highly reliable organization for the community we serve.”
