West Potomac saw the biggest increase in SAT scores in FCPS for seniors in the class of 2018.

Three of the four high schools serving the Richmond Highway area saw their average SAT scores rise in the 2017-2018 school year, but those scores still lagged behind most schools in the county.

West Potomac had the highest average SAT score (1,155) among Route 1-area schools, according to statistics released by Fairfax County Public Schools earlier this month. West Potomac also saw the biggest improvement in FCPS between 2017 and 2018, jumping by 43 points.

Edison and Mount Vernon also saw score increases for the class of 2018, while Hayfield’s average score dropped by two points.

However all four schools’ scores ranked in the bottom third among FCPS high schools, with Mount Vernon finishing last in the county despite its 11-point improvement. Mount Vernon was also the only FCPS school below the national average of 1,049.

FCPS’s overall scores remained well above the Virginia and U.S. averages. Thomas Jefferson again finished with the highest average in the county (1,516), while Langley was the highest scoring non-magnet school (1,314).

The scores were taken from the exams of  9,725 seniors in the class of 2018 who took the SAT.
