West Potomac crowned Grand Champion at band competition
The West Potomac Band cleaned up at Stafford High School Showcase on Saturday, winning in four categories en route to being crowned Grand Champion of the 23-school competition.
West Potomac won first place in the Music, Visual, General Effect and Color Guard categories. The Wolverines’ combined score was enough to earn them Grand Champions among all schools in the competition, regardless of size.
The Stafford Showcase was actually the second competition West Potomac participated in on Saturday. The Wolverines also won a first place in the Class 4A categories at the Hylton High School Hot Rod Classic.
The band plays a show called “The Luckiest” this year, which includes the songs Luck Be a Lady, The Luckiest, Get Lucky and An Irish Party in Third Class.
Robert Stewart and Sam Williams are the drum majors for the West Potomac Band. Steve Rice serves as band director and Mike Jensen is assistant band director.
I saw their performance and it was great. They were the largest band in the competition and made an impressive display on the field, and the funky dance moves their players incorporated were fun. In a wonderful display of comradery, the Mount Vernon High School Marching Majors welcomed them to the competition field with chants of “Let’s go WestPo”. It was inspiring to see our local high schoolers supporting each other. Congratulations on two wins in one day too!
