Richmond Highway widening meeting
VDOT is holding a community meeting tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Mount Vernon High School to discuss the recently released environmental review on the Richmond Highway widening project. The review, which is mandated by the federal government for projects of this scope, looks at how the area surrounding the nearly three-mile construction zone from Hybla Valley to Fort Belvoir is expected to be affected by the project.
$100K raised in name of former Waynewood student
Community members in the Fort Hunt and Mount Vernon areas have come together to raise $100,000 to fight childhood leukemia. The fundraiser was part of the LLS Light the Night Walk, an annual event held earlier this month in Washington D.C. Michael Erlandson, a former Waynewood Elementary School student who now lives in Colorado, inspired the fundraising effort. Erlandson was diagnosed with leukemia in kindergarten, but is now cancer-free as a 5th grader.

Fort Hunt student on Time cover
A second grader at Fort Hunt Elementary School has made the cover of Time magazine. Havana Chapman-Edwards first gained attention earlier this year when she was the only student at her school to walk out of class as part of a national protest against gun violence. Since then Champman-Edwards has participated in other protests and was recently selected as one of 245 people to appear on Time’s cover of a special issue on gun violence.
