Hayfield freshman Sue Lee finished 12th in the state at the VHSL Girls Open Championship, capping a stellar season that saw her win the Gunston District and finish as runner-up in the Occoquan Region.

Lee shot back-to-back 81s at the Springfield Golf Club on Monday and Tuesday, placing her near the top of the 64-player field. For the season, Lee averaged one over par in 9 hole matches.

Hayfield golf coach John Terrien credited Lee’s father with developing her game the last few years, and said she excelled right away during tryouts this summer.

“She works so hard and will get better and better these next three years,” Terrien said. “I see her earning a D1 scholarship down the road. She’s not only a great golfer but a great student.”

Lee’s strong freshman season earned the attention of WJLA Channel 7 earlier this year, who filmed the segment below on the 14 year old.
