Gas vapors blamed for Rose Hill garage fire
A garage fire on Sunday in the Rose Hill area began after gasoline vapors ignited in the engine compartment of an antique car that two people were working on, according to the Fairfax Fire and Rescue Department.
The fire started a little before 1:30 p.m. in the 5800 block of Brookview Drive (see map). The fire department said the two-car garage was on fire upon arrival, but was quickly extinguished before it could spread. The garage was not attached to the house.
Two people were working on the car when it caught on fire, but were able to escape. One person needed to be taken to a hospital for evaluation, according to the fire department. No firefighters were injured.
Investigators said that a spark came into contact with gas vapors and started the fire.
Damage was estimated to be around $25,000. Nobody was displaced by the blaze, and Red Cross assistance was not needed, according to the fire department.
