Fire caused by charcoal briquettes displaces three in Fort Hunt area

Three people were displaced by a house fire in the Fort Hunt area early Monday morning, according to the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department.

The fire, which was called in shortly after 2 a.m., broke out in a home in the 1100 block of Arcturus Lane (see map). The fire was caused by the accidental ignition of charcoal briquettes that were stored in a sunroom attached to the rear of the home, according to the fire department.

Charcoal briquettes and a number of other materials can spontaneously combust under certain conditions, according to information provided by a fire department spokesman.

Three residents, two guests and two dogs were at the home at the time of the fire. One of the residents found the fire after being awakened by a smoke alarm. The resident called 911 and also assisted two people exit from the basement of the one-story home, according to the fire department.

One person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, but choose not to go to the hospital, according to the fire department.

The blaze resulted in $237,500 in damages. Red Cross assistance was offered but declined, the fire department said.
