Citing safety concerns, officials from Fort Belvoir Family and MWR announced today that rides will be closed for the kick-off of the 22nd Annual Oktoberfest tonight due to muddy and slippery areas at Fremont Field.

The other scheduled activities, including the keg tapping ceremony, entertainment, beer and food service, will proceed as planned from 6 to 10 p.m. Officials noted that the weather forecast looks more favorable for the rest of the weekend, though muddy conditions and cool evening temperatures may prevail.

Fort Belvoir also posted updates on gate access for non-Department of Defense ID holders. Visitors who have not obtained a guest pass in advance must access the installation via Tulley Gate and stay in the right-hand lane for a security/driver’s license check for all vehicle occupants. Due to expected traffic congestion, however, garrison officials advise stopping by the Visitor’s Center at Tulley Gate today or tomorrow between 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. to request a weekend pass for Oktoberfest. The pass is valid through Sunday, September 30. Once non-DoD ID holders obtain that pass, they can enter Tulley Gate via the left-hand lane along with DoD ID card holders. All occupants of a vehicle over the age of 16 will need to have their own weekend pass. No other gate access is available for visitors.
