Richmond Highway public transit riders will soon have 11 more new bus shelters thanks to a Federal Transit Administration (FTA) grant to Fairfax County.

The new shelters are expected to be in place by the end of August, according to the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT). Another six shelters will be built by April 2019, and three more will be constructed sometime thereafter.

The new north- and southbound bus stops feature improvements such as concrete sidewalks, benches, trash receptacles and bike racks.

The shelters are being built with FTA grant funding designed to improve access to transit and transit facilities, an FCDOT representative said.

The 11 shelters currently under construction are located at the following Richmond Highway bus stops:

  • CitySide Huntington Metro apartments
  • Holly Hill Road
  • Brevard Court
  • Dutchman Drive
  • Fernedge Lane
  • Russell Road
  • Martha Street
  • Fordson Road
  • Collard Street
  • Mount Eagle Drive
  • Armistead Road

A number of other Richmond Highway bus stops were upgraded in 2016 and 2017, including ones at the intersections of Lockheed Boulevard, Frye Road, Belford Drive, Quander Road and Ladson Lane.
