Inova Mount Vernon moves up in latest U.S. News & World Report rankings
U.S. News & World Report published its 2018-2019 Best Hospital Honor Roll today, and Inova Mount Vernon Hospital made a strong performance in the regional rankings.
Overall, Inova Mount Vernon was ranked the #7 best hospital out of 58 total hospitals in the Washington, D.C. area, up from its #8 position last year. It also ranked #14 in Virginia — out of a total of 123 hospitals across the state — up from #18 in 2017.
Don Brideau, M.D., chief executive officer of Inova Mount Vernon, expressed pride in the hospital’s latest achievement.
“If you look at the concept of high reliability, we’re doing better and better,” said Brideau, who attributed the hospital’s continued improvement at least partly to getting frontline staff engaged in problem solving and in expertise sharing. “We’re transparent with our data, so staff can see results, and as part of our cultural transformation, we’re trying to put more emphasis on cultural beliefs that drive change,” he added.
U.S. News also ranked hospital performance in 16 areas of complex specialty care, rating Inova Mount Vernon as “high performing” in the specialty of orthopedics, and in performing hip and knee replacement procedures.
Although the hospital didn’t receive as high an overall score in the specialty of geriatrics due to having fewer patients and lower nurse staffing among other factors, the report showed that the hospital fared above average in 30-day survival and patient safety, and that it has excellent geriatric patient services. Results were similar for Inova Mount Vernon’s nephrology specialty.
As far as other procedures and conditions were concerned, the hospital received generally high marks on the “heart failure scorecard,” including in the areas of survival, discharging patients straight home, the patient experience and number of patients treated. Inova Mount Vernon also received score cards for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and colon cancer surgery.
