Driver dies after Porsche slams into SUV near Mount Vernon
A collision between two vehicles not far from the Mount Vernon estate left one person dead and sent another to the hospital Friday evening.
The crash happened sometime after 7 p.m. on Old Mount Vernon Road. A Porsche, which according to a witness was traveling at a high rate of speed, slammed into the rear of a 2013 Mercedes Benz SUV that had just turned left onto to Old Mount Vernon Road from Old Mill Road (see map).
The male driver of the Porsche was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead, according to the Fairfax County Police. A male passenger in the Porsche was taken to the hospital with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening.
Police have not released the name of the deceased, pending notification of relatives.
The driver of the Mercedes Benz was uninjured in the wreck, and was seen being interviewed by police afterward before departing the scene with his wife. He was the only occupant of the vehicle, which deployed both airbags and side curtain protection.
The wife of the SUV driver, who showed up at the scene after the wreck, credited the newly purchased SUV with saving her husband from serious injury.
The collision left debris scattered along the road. The force of the impact was violent enough that both vehicles ended up approximately 100 feet from the intersection, with the Porsche off the road in a group of trees and the SUV partially off the road in a drainage ditch next. Each vehicle lost a wheel from the force of the impact.
Crash scene investigators were still analyzing the scene after 11 p.m., and police said the road would remain closed for 3-4 more hours.
