Water main break in Groveton closes two lanes on Route 1

Crews were still working on repairing the broken water main well into Friday night.

A Friday morning water main break in the Groveton area closed two southbound lanes of Richmond Highway, and repair work remained ongoing Friday night.

The break happened near the intersection of Memorial Drive and Route 1 (see map) around 9:30 a.m. As of Friday night at 7:50 p.m., the water main had been fixed but street repair work was still in progress, according to Fairfax Water. However crews appeared to be digging a second hole in the street as of 9 p.m.

One southbound lane of Richmond Highway and part of the service road in front of the Beacon Center remained closed Friday night; the west side of Memorial Street is also closed off from the highway to the south entrance of the Beacon Center parking lot.

It’s unclear how many homes were affected by the break; a resident of the Beacon of Groveton apartments said the building’s water had come back on in the evening.
