Police blotter: Driver’s hood flies open while trying to flee officers

A 35-year-old Alexandria man is facing an array of charges after police say he tried to speed away during a traffic stop before eventually being foiled by his own vehicle’s hood and pursuing officers.

The suspect faces charges of DUI, driving with a revoked license, reckless driving, and disregarding police command to stop with endangerment to others after the pursuit, which police say began around 9:40 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Buckman Road and Seven Woods Drive (see map). Officers spotted a vehicle heading south on Buckman Road at high speed and with no headlights on, according to police. When they tried to pull the vehicle over, the driver kept going.

During the course of the chase, the hood of the suspect’s vehicle flew open, blocking the driver’s view. After that happened, police used the “PIT” maneuver — during which an officer bump the rear side of a vehicle to make it spin out — to bring the chase to an end.

Police did not say how long the chase lasted or where it ended. It is also unclear if there were any injuries from the execution of the PIT maneuver.
