Hot plate caused Sunday morning kitchen fire at Montebello
A hot plate accidentally left on a stove burner caused a small fire early Sunday morning at the Montebello condominium complex near Huntington, the Fairfax Fire and Rescue Department said Monday.
One resident needed to be transported to the hospital for a check-up after the fire, according to the fire department. No firefighters were hurt in the incident.
A security guard discovered the fire around 2:30 a.m., and called 911. The fire department said crews were able to put out the blaze quickly, and that the fire did not extend beyond the kitchen.
The unit had active smoke alarms, but they did not go off before firefighters arrived, the fire department said.
One person lived the unit where the fire broke out and was displaced. The resident declined Red Cross assistance, according to the fire department.
Damage from the fire was estimated to be $25,000.
Montebello consists of four 15-story high rise condominiums located at 5905 Mount Eagle Drive (see map). The fire department did not say on which floor Sunday’s fire occurred.
