Corbett Sanders elected school board chair
Mount Vernon district school board representative Karen Corbett Sanders has been elected chair of the Fairfax County School Board.
Corbett Sanders was elected unanimously at Thursday’s board meeting. Her term will last one year. Ilryong Moon, an at-large member of the board, was selected as vice chair for 2018-2019.
“We look forward to continuing the important work supporting our students and teachers as we implement our FCPS strategic plan,” Corbett Sanders said in an FCPS statement announcing her election. “We will continue our focus on making the One Fairfax equity goals a reality, achieving excellence in education for every student in Fairfax County.”
A resident of the Belle Haven area, Corbett Sanders retired after a career than included senior positions at Verizon and Booz Allen Hamilton. She was elected to the school board in 2016 and served as the board’s vice chair in 2017-2018.
Corbett Sanders has deep roots in the Richmond Highway area, graduating from Groveton High School (now West Potomac) in 1979. Her two children attended Belle View Elementary and Sandburg Middle Schools before graduating from West Potomac.
