Officers rescue runaway dog who took a dip in Huntley Meadows marsh

You never know what kind of creature you might spot in Huntley Meadows’ wetlands. A chihuahua, however, is typically not high on the list.

But that happened Saturday morning when a park goer saw the small dog alone in the muck near the boardwalk at Huntley Meadows. The Animal Protection Police were called, and officers DeAvies and Brunk helped pull the little pup to safety, according to the Fairfax County Police Department.

The police had some fun with incident on their Instagram, playfully announcing a trespasser had been caught.

“Officer Brunk and Officer DeAvies responded to a call of a subject willfully disregarding the “No Dogs on Boardwalk” sign in Huntley Meadows Park,” the post read. “The perpetrator, a small white chihuahua (well fed), was located hiding behind a partially submerged log a short distance from the elevated walkway. After a brief struggle, the officers were able to extricate the suspect and place him in custody. ”

A police spokesman said Wednesday that the dog was fine, and it has since been returned to its owner.
