Man charged with sexually assaulting 12-year-old girl at Fort Hunt Park
The U.S. Park Police announced today that they have arrested a 20-year-old man in connection with a sexual assault against a 12-year-old girl at Fort Hunt Park on June 13.
Dennis Barrahona-Urritia of Alexandria was arrested at his home on June 19, and faces charges of sexual assault against a minor. Barrahona-Urritia resisted arrest during his apprehension, with two police offers suffering minor injuries during the fracas, according to a Park Police press release.
Barrahona-Urritia remains in custody, according to the Park Police.
The case began on June 13 when police were called to the park a little before 9:30 a.m. in response to a reported sexual assault. At the park, they met with the girl and her grandmother, who is her legal guardian. The grandmother told police that the girl had a tracking device on her ankle and that she had found her at the park after working with the girl’s probation officer, according to court documents.
Upon her arrival at the park, the grandmother had confronted a man she saw walking with the 12-year-old girl, according to court documents. The man allegedly fled on foot after the grandmother asked him if he knew the girl’s age. Police arrived and closed the park for a search that included use of the Park Police helicopter, but they were unable to locate the suspect.
According to court documents, detective later interviewed the girl and found out she had called Barrahona-Urritia that morning and he had allegedly picked her up after she had walked away from school.The pair then proceeded to the park, where Barrahona-Urritia allegedly forcibly sexually assaulted her inside the park after first trying get her to perform a sexual act inside a car.
The victim told detectives that she and the suspect had previously been involved in a sexual relationship, and she was able to provide them with an old cell phone number that police say led them to Barrahona-Uritia.
