Wing Zone at Engleside Plaza opening on Thursday

Wing Zone is located in Engleside Plaza at 8634 Richmond Highway.

The new Wing Zone in the Engleside Plaza shopping center is opening at long last on Thursday.

Wing Zone will open its doors at 10:30 a.m. for customers, and will offer specials through Sunday on boneless chicken wing, chicken tender or burger baskets, according to franchise owner Ravko Zdravko. The restaurant will have about 10-15 employees and offers dine-in, carryout and delivery options. The delivery radius will be about five miles, and will include Fort Belvoir, Zdravko said.

Zdravko said he’s already been getting lots of phone calls and walk-up traffic, and he cited Richmond Highway’s continued growth when asked why he picked Engleside Plaza for his business.

“The area is building up, and a lot of things are planned to happen in the next couple years,” Zdravko said.

Wing Zone is opening in a space that has been empty since Virginia Barbeque closed in 2013. Originally the new restaurant had been scheduled to open in November, but Zdravko said upgrades to the space needed to be made, forcing the opening date to be pushed back.

We wanted to make sure we set it up the right way,” said Zdrvko.

The Wing Zone at Engleside will be the first location for the franchise in the Route 1 area, and just the third in Northern Virginia. The Georgia-based restaurant has more than 200 locations in the U.S. and overseas.

Wing Zone joins a crowded wing market in the Richmond Highway corridor. Wing rival Wing Stop has two locations around the highway — one in Penn Daw, the other on Cooper Road — and there’s a Buffalo Wild Wings at the Mount Vernon Plaza. Another wing specialist, Wing To Go, recently closed down its location in Mount Vernon Plaza.
