Six seasonal events coming to the Richmond Highway area in April
Regardless of the fickle weather, spring events and activities continue to blossom around the Richmond Highway corridor in April. Check out these six seasonal opportunities to look out for this month:
Waterway Cleanups. Help remove trash and restore waterways in and around Route 1 by participating in one of the many cleanups of the Potomac River Watershed scheduled between April 7 and 14. A map and description of all cleanup sites and events can be found here.
Debut of Reenactment at George Washington’s Mount Vernon. Watch Colonel Washington and his new bride Martha travel by horse-drawn carriage from the West Gate to the Mansion as they arrive at their new home. The event will take place April 21 at noon.
Spring Theater Performances. Enjoy the acting of three school and community-based theater groups. Mount Vernon Community Children’s Theater will perform Charlotte’s Web from April 6-15; West Potomac High School’s Beyond the Page Theatre Company will feature Jesus Christ Superstar from April 20-28; and Mount Vernon High School Theatre will present Bye Bye Birdie from April 26-28.
National Library Week 2018. During the week of April 8-14, Fairfax County libraries — including Martha Washington Library, Sherwood Regional Library and Lorton Library — will hold a scavenger hunt for families. Additionally, county residents can pick up a nomination form and vote for the “Best Places to Read in Fairfax County,” which will be transformed into a map this summer.
Spring Garden Market. Visit the plant sale and garden product marketplace at the American Horticultural Society’s annual event from April 13-14 at River Farm. Children and leashed pets are also welcome. A food truck will provide refreshments, or you may bring a picnic lunch.
Galas Galore. Support the Corridor’s charitable organizations by attending one of their spring galas. The Lorton Community Action Center holds its 2018 Spring Into Action Gala on April 7; Operation Renewed Hope Foundation has its 6th Annual Purple and Gold Gala on April 7; and United Community Ministries holds its Give From the Heart Gala on April 14.
