Monday notes: Walkout spotlighted, ‘Opportunity Zones’ nominated, Storck’s state of station
Walkout gets national attention
A first grader a Fort Hunt Elementary School drew national attention after she was photographed alone while taking part in a school walkout on Friday. Havana Chapman Edwards was the only one to walk out of her school as part of nationwide student walkouts against gun violence. After a photo of the youngster sitting by herself near school was posted to Twitter, outlets far and wide covered Edwards, including ABC News, CNN, The New York Daily News and Teen Vogue — with the latter incorrectly stating her school was in Washington D.C.
Reminder: Trump at Mount Vernon today
There aren’t expected to be any major road closures, but there may be some rolling closures and increased air traffic near the Mount Vernon estate today. President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Marcron and their wives will be dining at the estate, which will close at 1 p.m.
Richmond Highway “Opportunity Zones” nominated
Four census tracts on the Richmond Highway corridor have been nominated by Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam as “Opportunity Zones” eligible for certain kinds of investment outlined in the federal tax law passed last year.
The new law allows “investors to receive tax benefits on currently unrealized capital gains by investing those gains in qualified census tracts or ‘Opportunity Zones,'” the Southeastern Fairfax Development Corporation said. There were 212 zones nominated statewide.
Storck on the “State of the Station”
Mount Vernon District Supervisor Dan Storck discusses the state of crime and policing in the Mount Vernon police district in a column in last week’s Mount Vernon Gazette. Storck lauds the overall decrease in crime the district saw in 2017 and credits the local community for being more engaged with police. He also praises the new body camera program being piloted at the station, and thanks station commander Capt. Matt Owens and officers at the station for their continued efforts.
