2 displaced by fire in Burgundy Village neighborhood

Two people were displaced but nobody was injured when a townhouse caught fire last week in the Burgundy Village neighborhood off of Telegraph Road.

The fire broke out shortly before 8 p.m. April 23 in the garage of a three-story unit in the 3800 block of Elmwood Towne Way (see map). Flames were visible from the garage when firefighters arrived on the scene, according to a Fairfax County Fire and Rescue press release.

One person was at home at the time of the fire, and discovered the blaze when they smelled smoke and traced it to the garage. The occupant was able to escape safely, and the fire department said smoke alarms went off after the fire was noticed by the occupant.

The fire started in the garage and involved “an electrical event” in an outlet that the garage door opener was plugged into, according to fire investigators. Damage is estimated to be around $87,000.

The fire was extinguished before it could spread beyond the garage, according to the fire department.

Red Cross assistance was declined by the residents, according to the fire department.
