The Fairfax County Department of Transportation is hosting a community meeting March 14 to discuss the Mount Vernon Memorial Highway trail project.

The project, which is in the design phase, will construct two miles of 10-foot wide path to fill in missing segments of the National Heritage National Scenic Trail. The trail runs along Mount Vernon Memorial Highway from Route 1 to the Mount Vernon estate. The missing segments are between Richmond Highway and Southwood Drive.

The construction will include a pedestrian bridge over Dogue Creek. Other pedestrian improvements include marked crosswalks and curb ramps that meet American with Disabilities Act standards.

The project is estimated to cost $6.5 million, according to FCDOT.

The meeting will be held at Mount Vernon High School from 7-9 p.m. There will be an open house period from 7-7:30 p.m., followed by a 30-minute formal presentation and then a question-and-answer session.

More information on the project and a form to provide feedback can be found on the FCDOT website.
