Monday notes: Antique center update, West Po swimmer profile, Voice pauses
West Potomac swimmer profiled
West Potomac senior Cassidy Bayer won a gold medal this weekend in her final high school meet at the Virginia High School League swim and dive championships. For Bayer, who nearly qualified for the 2016 Olympics in Rio, it was the latest step in the road back from a fluky knee injury suffered in a powder puff football game.
Bayer still has Olympic hopes, and she’ll be swimming at the University of Cal-Berkely next year. Read her story on WashingtonPost.com.
Mount Vernon Antique Center update
The Mount Vernon Gazette recently caught up with the owner of the Mount Vernon Antique Center and some of the vendors. Sam Nasafi, the owner of the antique center, told the Gazette that he is scouting new locations for the business and had been in the process of selling the building when the fire occurred. No official cause has been announced yet for the blaze, but an investigator told the Gazette it should be done in a “few weeks.”

Mount Vernon Voice suspending publication
The publishers of the Mount Vernon Voice announced in last week’s edition of the paper that they are suspending operations indefinitely. Published since 2002 by Steve Hunt and Marlene Miller, the Voice was a print-only weekly publication that covered the Mount Vernon District and Lee District areas.
See more details about the decision on the Mount Vernon-Lee Chamber of Commerce’s Facebook page.
Body camera program start date announced
Patrol officers at the Mount Vernon district station will begin wearing body cameras March 1 as part of a pilot program being implemented by the Fairfax County Police Department. Mount Vernon is one of three stations in the county participating in the program, which will last for 180 days.
