Ghaisar memorial

The parents of Bijan Ghaisar set up a memorial for their son Sunday afternoon at the intersection of Fort Hunt Road and Alexandria Avenue, the spot where the 25 year old was shot by Park Police officers in November. Sunday marked the 100th day since the incident, and his parents are still seeking an answer for why their son was shot. The reason for the shooting, as well as the names of two officers who fired at Ghaisar, have not been released by either the Park Police or the FBI, who is currently investigating the shooting.

State Sen. Scott Surovell, who lives nearby, captured the moment and shared an image on Facebook

Corbett Sanders town hall

Mount Vernon district school board representative Karen Corbett Sanders is holding a town hall meeting Tuesday night at South County High School. Parents, students and community members are invited to the gathering, which will be a discussion of issues facing Fairfax County Public Schools.

New citizens at Mount Vernon

Fifty-one new Americans hailing from 37 different countries took the oath of citizenship at the Mount Vernon estate last week. The ceremony coincided with the 286th birthday of George Washington, and the new citizens were treated to cake and a speech by an actor playing the first president.

State playoff schedule

Three local basketball teams fell short in their region final matchups last weekend, but they’re still alive in the Virginia High School League state tournament:

  • The Hayfield boys, who fell to South County in the 6C final Saturday, will play Battlefield on Friday night at Patriot High School in Nokesville (see map)
  • The Edison girls, who lost to Freedom-South Riding in the 5C title last Friday, don’t know their opponent yet. The Lady Eagles will play at the winner of Tuesday’s 5D region final between William Fleming and Patrick Henry.
  • The Edison boys, who fell to Wakefield in Friday’s 5C final, also don’t know their quarterfinal opponent yet. The Eagles will travel to either Albemarle or Harrisonburg, who are squaring off Tuesday evening in the 5D final game.
