Mackey leads All-Gunston District team loaded with highway-area players

West Potomac guard Daryl Mackey Jr. was named Gunston District Player of the Year in boys basketball following a regular season in which he led the D.C. metro area in scoring.

Mackey, a junior, finished the year averaging 24.8 points per game and helped lead an inexpereiced Wolverine team to the Gunston regular season title.

Two Hayfield players, junior Mike Joiner and senior Brian Cobbs, joined Mackey on the first team. Mount Vernon also landed two first-team selections, with sophomore T.J. Horton and senior Elisha Amoako getting the nod.

Amoako, Joiner, Hayfield senior DeMonte Richardson, West Potomac junior Shannon Harrigan and Mount Vernon junior Elonte Cook all made the all-Gunston defensive team.

West Potomac coach David Houston III was voted the Gunston District Coach of the Year. Houston, who had to replace four starters and his sixth man from last year’s district-winning squad, overcame a 1-9 start to finish first in the district. Season highlights included sweeps of Richmond Highway-area rivals Mount Vernon and Hayfield.
