Seeking feedback, Park Authority to hold Mount Vernon District Park trail walk

The Fairfax County Park Authority is inviting residents on a trail walk at the Mount Vernon District Park next week to get feedback ahead of a revision of the park’s master plan.

The walk will be on December 15 from 10-11:30 a.m., and anyone interested in the future of the park is invited to meet beforehand in the parking lot of the Mount Vernon Recreation Center, located at 2017 Belle View Boulevard (see map).

All Fairfax County parks have a master plan, which guides the parks’ uses and where those uses will be on the property. The master plan is designed to inform long-range vision of the park, including any future development. Mount Vernon District Park’s current master plan dates back to 1972.

New trails are already planned for Mount Vernon District Park, and the Park Authority expects a final map of those to be completed in the near future.

The current trails in the park have been developed over time by neighbors and animals, with some being redundant and many causing fragmentation of the forest and soil erosion, said Liz Cronauer, a trail program manager for the Park Authority.

“The planned improvements are to create a sustainable trail system in the park that meets neighborhood needs and retains connectivity, but removes redundant and eroding or wet trails,” Cronauer said.
